This season's BT Premiership Division 1 campaign was started on a fine sunny afternoon with the playing surface at The Greenyards being in excellent condition.
Scott Ruthven had Melrose six points up with penalties at 30 seconds and 5 minutes. On the quarter hour Graham Kiddie scored a try in the right corner and, ten minutes later, following a quickly taken tap penalty, Euan Mathieson scored Boroughmuir's second try. James Reilly kicked a penalty for the visitors and then, just on half time, Matt Morrell raced down the right wing for a try beneath the posts, Alan Sievwright converting.

A minute into the second half Morrell repeated the medicine to increase the Boroughmuir lead. Five minutes later, following a rolling maul, Wayne Mitchell burrowed over for a try and ten minutes after that Scott Wight dived over for a try, converted by Ruthven, to give Melrose some hope. In the last quarter, however, it was one way traffic with Morrell (66 mins), Rory Couper (69 mins), Malcolm Clapperton (74 mins), Chris Capaldi (79 mins) and Stephen Ruddock (80 mins) all scoring tries for Boroughmuir with Sievwright and Kiddie only converting one each.
