Melrose 30 Stirling County 32

This BT Premiership match was played on a cold afternoon with a strong diagonal wind. Playing with the wind in the first half Melrose opened the scoring with a Scott Ruthven penalty at 11 minutes. At 25 minutes Andrew Skene broke through before passing to Alec Clark who scored a try between the posts, Ruthven converting. Almost from the kick off a Ruthven clearance bounced off Craig Sangster who followed up to score a try in the corner. Brian Archibald kicked a penalty at 32 minutes and, after the Stirling scrum half was sent off for stamping, Ruthven kicked a penalty to give Melrose a 13 points to 8 half time lead.

In the second minute of the second half Archibald kicked a penalty, then, playing into the wind, the Melrose lead was increased by Jonathan Bradburn, after a scrum pick up, scoring a try converted by Ruthven, at 45 minutes. Three minutes later, after a breakout from defence down the right wing and passing through several pairs of hands, the ball was passed to Johnny Weston who scored a try between the posts, Ruthven again converting. At 72 minutes Sangster drove over from a short penalty to score a try converted by Archibald, and at 76 minutes Ruthven kicked another penalty. A line out from the kick off, at 77 minutes, saw Ian Noble break through the centre for a try converted by Archibald. Ten minutes later, and deep into "injury time", and following a controversial refereeing decision, Archibald scored a try between the posts, he, himself, converting to give Stirling the victory.
