Hawick 13 Melrose 20

With Mansfield Park only being declared playable an hour before kick-off, following recent frost, the surface, inevitably, became glutinous making adventurous rugby somewhat difficult. Scott Ruthven gave Melrose the lead by kicking penalties at 15 & 22 minutes. On the half hour, following broken play, Andrew Skene passed to Geoff Caldwell who raced into the corner for a try, admirably converted by Ruthven. At 37 minutes Gary Law kicked a penalty to open the Hawick account, but the half finished, again following broken play, when Jonathon Rimmer passed the ball to Henry Lawson, who scored a try between the posts, Ruthven again converting.
Half time - Hawick 3 Melrose 20.
Nine minutes into the second half a Hawick penalty resulted in a line out in the corner. From the ensuing ruck David Irving failed to cross the try line, but did flick the ball to Ian Elliot who bullocked over for a try converted by Law. Despite considerable territorial advantage Hawick failed to breach the Melrose defence, and the only other score of the match was Law's second penalty at 74 minutes.
Hawick 13 Melrose 20.
