This BT Premiership match was played on a dull and still afternoon and, in the first half, the rugby matched the weather. Penalties by Scott Ruthven at 5 & 32 minutes and Greg Rutherford at 38 minutes were all that troubled the scorekeeper during this period.
Half time - Melrose 6 Currie 3.
One minute into the second half Rutherford levelled the score with his second penalty. At 57 minutes Jonathan Rimmer split the Currie defence and ran in from the 22 to between the posts for a try converted by Ruthven. Three minutes later Geoff Caldwell finished off a fine threequarter move with a sprint to the right corner for a well taken try. Three minutes after that Ian Riddell was tackled without the ball as he was chasing his own kick ahead close to the line and Melrose were awarded a penalty try, converted by Ruthven. A series of replacements then took place, including referee Martin Valentine who, with Achiiles trouble, was replaced by touch judge John Brownlee who, in turn, was replaced as touch judge, by Melrose President, Ian Cooper. With the last move of the match, following a series of 5 metre scrums, Melrose won the ball and Caldwell broke through for his second, and the bonus point, try, this time between the posts. Ruthven converted.
