Graeme Ferguson opened the scoring for Ayr with a penalty kick, but Melrose fought back with a try by Calum MacRae. Ayr took the lead again with a forwards try scored by Damien Kelly. Scott Ruthven completed the first half scoring with a penalty.

A purple patch at the start of the second half saw Ayr scoring two tries, one by Kyle Bruning and the second, after he collected his own chip ahead, by Kenny Sinclair, both converted by Ferguson. Melrose fought back with Henry Lawson crossing for a try converted by Ruthven, who also kicked a penalty within the last ten minutes. Considerable Melrose pressure ensued, but the Ayr defence was equal to the task in preventing Melrose from scoring any further points.
