On a beautiful afternoon for running rugby this BT Premiership Division 1 match was a dour, but exciting, affair with the first score, a penalty by Watsonins full back, Colin Gregor, coming after 14 minutes. Ten minutes later Wayne Mitchell burrowed over, following a line out, in the Policeman's Corner, for a try converted from the touchline by Scott Ruthven. Ruthven finished the first half scoring with a penalty just prior to the interval.

Robert Pollock, playing his first game for the 1st XV, raced through for a try, converted by Ruthven, one minute into the second half. Gregor kicked two more penalties at 47 & 59 minutes, interspersed by a fine drop goal by scrum half, and "Melrose Man of the Match", Johnny Weston at 53minutes. Due to a "sin-binning" Melrose were down to 14 men for the last 8 minutes, but managed to sustain Watsonian pressure to run out victors.
