In dreadful weather conditions and in front of a sparse crowd, both teams for this final BT Premiership match were understrength with several young players being given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Scott Wight (1) & Johnny McClung (2) opened the scoring with penalties before Alastair Fairbairn picked up at the base of the scrum and passed to Chris Thomson who wriggled over for a try. Wight then charged down an Ayr clearance kick and beat the defence to the touchdown for his try. McClung finished the first half scoring with his third penalty at 40 minutes.

Wight (2) & McClung (1) kicked penalties to keep the scoreboard ticking over before Geoff Caldwell, at 60 minutes, scored a try, converted by Wight. John Steel managed, at 70 minutes, to breach the Melrose defence for a try, but, 5 minutes before time, Caldwell, again, crossed the line for his second try, converted by Wight.
