Melrose 21 Heriots 26

On a beautiful afternoon, a credit to winter rugby, the conditions were excellent for a game of running rugby. Craig Sutherland started the scoring ball rolling ending a good move by the home team by diving over for a try, converted by Scott Wight, at five minutes. Three minutes later, following a lineout on the Melrose five metre line, Neil Meikle crashed over for a try in the Town Corner. Wight kicked two penalties at 21 & 25 minutes, and then, at 32 minutes, Jonathan White scored Heriots second try in an identical fashion to the first one, with Rob Dewey converting. Wight kicked his third penalty at 36 minutes to end the first half scoring.
Half time - Melrose 16 Heriots 12.
Three minutes into the second half Andrew McIntosh scored a try, Andrew Olsen converting, to give Heriots a lead that they never lost. At 53 minutes Melrose were within the Heriots 22 when they knocked on and Heriots broke out for Dewey to run almost the length of the pitch for the Heriots "bonus point" try, converted by Olsen. At 73 minutes Jamie (no.13) Murray put in a grubber kick behind the Heriots defence and scored a try to keep Melrose hopes alive. Unfortunately, despite pressure on the Heriots line, there was no "Get Out of Jail" card available for Melrose to-day and the 100% home record was lost.
Melrose 21 Heriots 26.
