Selkirk 17 Melrose 24

On a cold and damp afternoon Selkirk, with the wind at their backs, opened the scoring in this "Southern Reporter" Border League match with a Michael Rutherford penalty after ten minutes. With Selkirk pressing, at 19 minutes, Melrose broke out of defence in their own 22 and a fine handling move was finished off by Barry Watson who crossed for a try under the posts, Scott Ruthven converting. Twelve minutes later, following a line-out close to the Melrose line the Melrose defence was breached by Fraser Harkness who scored a try between the posts, the conversion being kicked by Rutherford.
Half time - Selkirk 10 Melrose 7.
Ruthven levelled the score with a penalty at 52 minutes and, at 68 minutes Melrose regained the lead when back row forward Jamie Murray finished another handling move crashing over for a try converted by Ruthven. With a spate of front row injuries the match went to "uncontested scrums" at 72 minutes. Three minutes later Geoff Caldwell followed up a long "fly hack" out of defence. The Selkirk defender's clearance kick, from his own goal line, bounced off the advancing Caldwell who collected the loose ball to score a try converted by Ruthven. Finally, just on no-side, Martin Murray completed a pick and drive sequence by crashing over for a try converted by Rutherford.
Selkirk 17 Melrose 24.
