With a 3.00pm kick-off this BT Premiership match was played under floodlights on a damp surface. Melrose raced into a six point lead with two Scott Ruthven penalties, the first two minutes into the match and the second six minutes later. At 22 minutes, following a pick and drive move, Chris Weir crossed for a try and five minutes after that Gala took a quick penalty resulting in Andy McLean diving over for a try to give Gala a four point lead. However, Ruthven converted two more penalties, at 32 & 37 minutes, to give the half time lead back to Melrose.

Two minutes into the second half Chris Dalgleish kicked a penalty to return the lead to Gala and,at 55 minutes, following a series of picks and drives, Jamie Henderson crashed over for Gala's third try to extend their lead. Ruthven kicked his fifth penalty at 67 minutes and his sixth at 77 minutes to level the score. The last move of the match, deep into injury time, saw Scott Wight kick a magnificent drop goal from all of 45 metres to give Melrose victory.
