This BT Premiership match was played on a Sunday as a result of the Scotland v Japan match played on the Saturday. Three minutes into the match Scott Wight opened the scoring with a penalty followed, four minutes later, by a Barry Watson try and, at eleven minutes, by a Craig Chalmers drop goal. James Noonan and Wight swapped penalties at 13 & 17 minutes and at 34 & 38 minutes Noonan kicked two more penalties. Then, just on the interval, Paul Burke scored a try, converted by Noonan, to give Ayr the half time lead.

Ayr started the second half with a bang with Graeme Ferguson scoring a try at 46 minutes and Stuart Majorian repeating the feat six minuteslater, his try being converted by Noonan, to give Ayr a 14 point lead. Three minutes later Karne Kaufana reduced the deficit with a try and, at 68 minutes, Graeme Dodds' try, converted by Wight reduced the deficit to two points. However, during the final ten minutes Noonan kicked two penalties to only one by Wight.
