Melrose 39 Boroughmuir33

This BT Premiership match was played on a cool, dull afternoon with a swirling breeze and on a pitch which was in excellent condition. Scott Hadden kicked three penalties to Scott Ruthven's two in the first 24 minutes and then, at 28 minutes Boroughmuir broke out of defence in the Policeman's Corner with Dougie Brown crossing for a try in the opposite corner, Hadden converting. Two minutes later Scott Wight broke free with Scott Aitken receiving the pass to score in the Town Corner, Ruthven converting, and after another two minutes Wight repeated the exercise, this time passing to Jarrod Murphy for a try converted by Ruthven. Just before the interval a passing move, from the Melrose 22, between the two Boroughmuir props led to no.3, Ramon Mathieson crossing for a try.
Half time - Melrose 20 Boroughmuir 21
Hadden increased the Boroughmuir lead with a penalty at 53 minutes, but Ruthven's penalties at 58 & 63 minutes returned the lead to Melrose. The lead changed again with Graeme Kiddie's drop goal at 65 minutes. Ruthven kicked two more penalties at 67 & 73 minutes to Hadden's one at 76 minutes to keep the spectators on the edge of their seats. At 78minutes Ruthven's beautifully angled run ran on to Murphy's pass for a try between the posts which he, himself, converted, to give Melrose a healthy lead, but, just at the death, Hadden kicked another penalty to give Boroughmuir the "bonus point" for finishing within seven points of Melrose.
With 29 points to his credit Ruthven was voted Melrose "Man of the Match".
