Hawick 26 Melrose 26

With the strong wind at their backs Hawick battered at the Melrose defence eventually breaking it down after 20 minutes when Keith Hedley scored a try beating the Melrose defenders for the touch down. Gary Law converted. Five minutes later Cameron Bruce scored a try converted by Law and, on the half hour, Kevin Reid scored a try, again converted by Law.
Half time - Hawick 21 Melrose 0.
After the interval Scott Ruthven kicked three penalties to put Melrose on the scoreboard. It was not until 70 minutes had been played before Melrose scored a try, Craig Chalmers doing the honours with Ruthven converting. A few minutes later Jarrod Murphy scored a try, converted by Ruthven, to give Melrose the lead for the first time. At 77 minutes Ruthven kicked his fourth penalty to increase this lead, but, deep into injury time, the effervescent Roddy Deans broke out, passing to Bruce, who crossed for his second try. Fortunately for Melrose the attempted conversion drifted wide on the wind leaving the honours even.
