Melrose 71 Gala 7

This BT Premiership match, the first part of a Greenyards "double header" with The Borders, kicked off at 1.00pm on a dull and damp afternoon which improved to sunshine as the match progressed. The strong wind, however, continued throughout the afternoon. Seven minutes into the match Jamie Henderson drove over from a line-out for a try converted by Chris Dalgleish to give Gala the lead. At 21 minutes Graeme Dodds broke out from his own 22 passing to winger Jamie Murray who sprinted the length of the stand to score a try in the Town corner, converted by Scott Ruthven.Five minutes later Karne Kaufana received a loop pass and went over for a try. Just before half time Murray broke out passing to Kaufana whose pass sent Geoff Caldwell in for a try in the Policeman's Corner, Ruthven converting.

Immediately after the interval Scott Aitken broke through the middle of a ruck and ran 22 metres for a try converted by Ruthven, and eight minutes later Wayne Mitchell picked up and drove over for a try converted by Ruthven. At 55 minutes Jarrod Murphy, running down the left wing, chipped ahead and was "taken out" with the ball lying in the in-goal area, resulting in a penalty try converted by Ruthven. Caldwell took a quick tap penalty three minutes later and sprinted down the stand side for his second try, converted by Ruthven. At 65 minutes Mark Robertson sprinted down the Church side for a try converted by Ruthven. At 72, 78 & 80 minutes Caldwell, the Retties "Man of the Match", sprinted down the stand side for his 3rd, 4th & 5th tries, the first of which was converted by Ruthven.
