Melrose 32 Glasgow Hawks 25

Yet another season has started and, although it is still August, the weather was cool with a chilly breeze, but a firm pitch to encourage open rugby and, in the first half, that is what was on offer.
Mike Adamson opened the scoring, at 3 minutes, with a penalty. With a pick and drive Scott Aitken scored a try, converted by Craig Chalmers, under the posts, at 9 minutes. This was followed by Adamson's second penalty, then, Chalmers, at 19 minutes, kicked a penalty from between the half way and 10 metre lines. Five minutes later new boy Karne Kaufana split the Hawks defence for a try between the posts, converted by Chalmers and, 2 minutes after that a passing move between both Jamie Murrays led to a pass to a flying Geoff Cladwell whose try between the posts was converted by Chalmers. Chalmers was then "yellow carded" for a high tackle and, almost immediately after, Steve Begley picked up at the base of the scrum for a try converted by Adamson. Scott Ruthven then kicked a penalty at 35 minutes and, just before the break Begley repeated the medicine for a try in the corner.

The second half was a more tense affair with a plethora of replacements. At 51 minutes Greg Francis completed a passing movement with a try under the posts, converted by Adamson to reduce the Melrose lead to two points. Hawks drove hard and Melrose defended heroically for most of the second half and, then, at 69 minutes Melrose broke out from their own 22 with Graham Dodds finishing off with the "bonus point" try in the Town corner. That ended the scoring in an exciting match.
