Nick Lavelle opened the scoring in this BT Cup Round 5 match by kicking a penalty after three minutes. At 18 minutes Dave Whiteford crossed for a try converted by Scott Ruthven, who also kicked a penalty at 33 minutes. Deep into "stoppage time" before the interval Stuart Fenwick crossed for a try converted by Lavelle.
Half time - Ayr 10 Melrose 10.
In a "golden period" after the break Melrose scored two tries. The first, at 43 minutes, was scored by Graham Thomson with James King converting, and then, seven minutes later following his own chip ahead, King collected to score a try which he, himself, converted. Fenwick scored his second try at 70 minutes with Lavelle adding the points and, with five minutes to go, an Ayr interception was successfully defended allowing Melrose to progress to the next round.
