Thanks to the efforts of groundsman,Gordon Barkham, to make the pitch playable after frost this BT Premiership match went ahead on a fine, sunny afternoon. Two minutes into the match Karne Kaufana broke the visitors defence and quick hands allowed Barry Watson to score a try in the left corner. Gregor Townsend kicked the difficult conversion. At 26 minutes, following a scrum 5 the ball was spun wide across the face of the Melrose posts for Jed Gordon to score a try in the Town Corner.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first with Kaufana, at 42 minutes, making a break and running most of the length of the pitch before off-loading to the backing up Jamie Murraywho scored a try between the posts, Scott Wight converting. At 52 minutes Richard Borthwick kicked a penalty and then, at 64 minutes Borthwick ran down the stand side beating the Melrose defence on the outside to score a try in the right corner. His conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but because a Melrose player shouted during the kick the conversion was retaken, this time successfully, giving Stewart's Melville victory by the single point.
