Heriots 33 Melrose 19

The second Premiership match of the season was played on an extremely hot afternoon on a hard and unwatered pitch. Spectators were hardly seated when Anders Monro kicked his first penalty, and, then, at eight minutes, he crossed in the right corner for a try which he, himself, converted. The scoring, for the rest of the half, was limited to three penalties apiece for Scott Ruthven (12, 17 & 39 minutes) and Monro (14, 29 & 32 minutes).

Eleven minutes into the second half John Houston sliced through the Melrose defence passing to Steve Manning who scored a try in the left corner, Monro converting. Ruthven kicked a penalty at 55 minutes, but this was followed, three minutes later with Mark Teague crashing over in the right corner for a try converted by Monro. Arguably the best try of the match was scored by Dave Whiteford at 63 minutes, under the posts, Ruthven converting. Although Melrose pressed hard there were no more scores.
