Melrose 23 Gala 0

"Southern Reporter" Border League rugby was The Greenyards fare this afternoon on a cold, but dry day. This was Scott Aitken's last game for Melrose, on his 326th appearance - he will be missed and is thanked by all members of the Melrose Club. Scott Ruthven opened the scoring after 13 minutes with a penalty. At 27 minutes fine backing up by the back row saw Stuart Johnson race in at the corner for a try, and, apart fro a Ruthven penalty at 37 minutes, that was all the first half scoring.
Half time - Melrose 11 Gala 0
Fourteen minutes into the second half David Whiteford broke out of defence on his own 22 and on the Gala 22 slipped the ball to Karne Kaufana who crossed for a try converted by Ruthven. Apart from a flurry of substitutions and "yellow cards" the only other action of note came five minutes from the end. Melrose gained a 5 metre scrum in the Town Corner, having been held up over the line, the ball was spun wide to Mark Robertson who battled over for a try in the Policeman's Corner to end the scoring.
