This BT Premiership match saw the start of the second round of matches and, despite the defeat, represented an improved Melrose performance. Mike Adamson opened the scoring by kicking a penalty after nine minutes with James King replying in kind three minutes later. At 34 minutes Adamson kicked his second penalty. The first try of the match came deep into stoppage time at the break when Steven Duffy nipped in for a try converted by Adamson.

It took until 62 minutes before Karne Kaufana scored a try converted by Scott Ruthven, but 5 minutes later Mark Sitch increased the Hawks lead with a try converted by Adamson. At 77 minutes Ruthven kicked a penalty to bring Melrose within seven points, but, after 8 "extra" minutes Adamson took advantage of a lapse in the Melrose defence to score a try under the posts he, himself, converting to deny Melrose the losing "bonus" point.
