Within a minute of kick off in this BT Premiership match Will Campbell slid into the right corner following up on a chip through to score a try which he, himself, converted. After 14 minutes Campbell kicked a penalty. Scott Ruthven kicked a penalty at 36 minutes to put Melrose on the scoresheet, but, three minutes later the Watsonian lead was increased when Bryan Rennie came on to the ball at pace from deep to score a try, Campbell converting. Ruthven kicked his second penalty just on the interval.

A dummy from Ruthven let Geoff Caldwell in for a try which Ruthven converted in the first minute of the second half. A few minutes later Rennie, controversially, beat the Melrose defence to the touch down for his second try, Campbell again converting. Although the Melrose forwards were now in the ascendency the only reward for their efforts was two Ruthven penalties and a "bonus point" for losing by less than seven points.
