Four minutes into the match, and following a fine handling move, James King touched down for a try converted by Scott Ruthven. Twenty minutes later Stuart Johnston, taking a well timed flip pass from Karne Kaufana, raced over for a try. Graham Hogg slotted two penalties for Hawick at 29 & 35 minutes, with Keith Hedley scoring a try in between these penalties, to keep Hawick in contention.

Melrose stepped up a gear after the break and were rewarded by two Ruthven penalties (41 & 48 minutes) and a try scored by Richard Higgins when he barged over from short range at 61 minutes, Ruthven converting. Melrose tried hard to score a "bonus point" try, but were unsuccessful.
