Melrose 33 Dundee 32

On a beautiful, but cold, afternoon for rugby, but with a strong breeze blowing the length of the pitch, this Scottish Hydro Electric "Super Cup" match was definitely a game of two halves. This was the first time the experimental Law Variations, under which this match was played, had been seen at The Greenyards and all the players were certainly exhausted by no-side. The game was less than a minute old when Wayne Mitchell burst up the far side off-loading to Alec Jessop who scored a try in the Church corner. Five minutes later Jamie Murray nipped in under the posts for a try converted by Scott Wight. Within a minute Ross Miller picked up on the Dundee 10 metre line and, showing a clean pair of heels to the opposition, scored a try between the posts, Wight adding the conversion points. Scott McCormick dived in under the posts for the Melrose "bonus point" try, giving Wight another simple conversion, and this after only 15 minutes. At 19 minutes Andy Dymock raced down the far side for a try in the Policeman's Corner to start the Dundee scoring. Four minutes later a Melrose clearance kick bounced off Neil McComb who gathered and crossed for a try converted by Dave Parkhill. Parkhill added to the Dundee score with a penalty at 26 minutes. At 29 minutes Ross Ovens, backing up as a good flanker should, crossed for a try by the posts with Wight converting. Wight failed with two long range penalties just on the interval and both sides were relieved to hear the half time whistle.
Half time - Melrose 33 Dundee 15.
Following up a kick and rush move Mark Jenkinson scored a try for Dundee at 51 minutes, Parkhill converting, and ten minutes later Mike Kerr dived in at the Church corner for the Dundee "bonus point" try following a scrum 5. At 70 minutes, despite being short handed after a "yellow card" Dundee scored their final try through the efforts of Richie Hawkins. This brought them within a point of Melrose, but neither side was able to add to the score.
