Melrose 12 Glasgow Hawks 8

Considering the dreadful weather of the past week it was thanks to groundsman Gordon Barkham's efforts on the pitch that this final Premier 1 match was able to go ahead. It was cold and damp with a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch. Despite this it was not a game of "two halves". Playing against the wind, and down to 14 men with Graeme Dodds in the "sin bin", Melrose opened the scoring at 17 minutes with a try scored by Scott Wight who wriggled in at the Town Corner. It was not a day when kickers had much success, but, at 34 minutes, with Richard Higgins now in the "bin", Mike Adamson kicked the resulting penalty to put Hawks on the scoreboard.
Half time - Melrose 5 Glasgow Hawks 3.
Eight minutes into the second half, following a quickly taken penalty, Wayne Mitchell drove over from his own particular distance, from the third of the resulting rucks, for a try between the posts, Wight converting. Five minutes later, and with Melrose pressing in the Hawks 22, a pass deflected by the strong wind was hacked on by Hawks right up to the Policeman's Corner. The move finished with Jamie Kerr touching down for a try. Both sides missed penalties thereafter, but there was no change to the score.
