Currie 15 Melrose 27

The inaugural Scottish Hydro Electric "Super Cup" match saw Melrose making better use of the IRB Experimental Law Variations and forcing Currie into making a catalogue of errors. Scott Wight opened the scoring with a penalty after 3 minutes play, but Currie replied six minutes later when Evan Haigh was released for a well worked try. At 11 minutes Wayne Mitchell sold an exquisite "dummy" to the Currie defence to score a try from further out than his usual distance, Wight converting. On the half hour, following a sustained Melrose attack Stuart Johnson crossed for a try and, a few minutes later, Barry Watson completed a move initiated by Jamie Murray to score a try. As the half was ending Ally Warnock kicked a penalty.
Half time - Currie 8 Melrose 20.
Graham Calder opened the second half with a try converted by Warnock to reduce the Melrose lead, but 10 minutes later Callum Anderson intercepted a loose Currie pass and galloped all of 60 metres for a try converted by Wight to complete the scoring. Both teams, however, kept at it and in an attempt to score a second try Haigh raced down the wing, but his speed was not enough to outrun Ross Millar, the Melrose second row, who "buried" his opponent in what was described as the tackle of the match.
