Five minutes into this Premier 1 match Euan Campbell gave the home team the lead scoring a try, but this lead was eroded two minutes later with Scott Wight's first penalty. Keith Oddie kicked penalties at 27 & 35 minutes to give Grammar an eight point lead at the interval.

Nine minutes into the second half Graeme Dodds crashed over for a try converted by Wight, and at 55 minutes Wight's second penalty gave Melrose the lead for the first time. This he increased with his third penalty four minutes later. With a minute to go Wight finished the Melrose scoring with a drop goal, but the final score came just on no-side when Martin Stanning crossed for a try.
