Melrose had the better of the opening exchanges in this Premier 1 match, but, with their only two excursions, early on, into the Melrose half Watsonian's Mike Ker kicked two penalties before Craig Edwards countered with a penalty for Melrose. Towards the end of the half Will Rowley scored the game's first try, converted by Ker.

Down to 14 men Melrose pressed and Graeme Dodds crossed for a try converted by Edwards. Jeff Nicholson replied with a try, converted by Ker, to extend the Watsonian lead, but Edwards, then Kieran Cooney crossed for tries , both converted by Edwards, to give Melrose the lead at 67 minutes. Within the last 13 minutes Ker kicked his third penalty before Nicholson scored his second try, converted by Ker, who ended the scoring with his fourth penalty.
