Melrose 18 Heriots 59

A cold breeze welcomed the players for this Premier 1 match on an otherwise beautiful day for rugby. Melrose had the best of the opening stages with Scott Wight and Graham Wilson trading penalties at 3 & 5 minutes. At 15 minutes, on only the second Heriots foray into the Melrose half, Tam McVie drove over in the corner for a try converted by Wilson. In repost, three minutes later, Alec Jessop scored a try in the Policeman's Corner, following a cross field movement. The Heriots lead increased at 25 minutes when John Houston danced over for a try between the posts giving Wilson a straight forward conversion. At 37 minutes, with Melrose pressing, Marc Teague intercepted a loose Melrose pass on the Heriot's 22 and ran almost the length of the pitch unopposed to dot down between the posts, Wilson again converting. Then, just on the interval, Wight kicked his second penalty.
Half time - Melrose 11 Heriots 24.
Heriots started the second half with a "Golden Spell". At 44 & 45 minutes Jamie Osbourne and Teague finished fine handling passing moves down the Church side of the pitch to score tries in the Policeman's Corner, Wilson converting both. There was a lull in the scoring for eighteen minutes, then Graeme Dodds, at 63 minutes, gave the Melrose "faithful" some hope by driving over from a penalty lineout, Wight converting. However, at 68 minutes Teague fly hacked over for a try converted by Wilson and, then, the Policeman's Corner saw the action again with, first, Dylan Mason, at 70 minutes, then Wilson, himself, at 74 minutes, completing fine passing movements down the Church side to score tries which Wilson converted.
