Melrose 21 Boroughmuir 23

The first home match of this season's Premier 1 campaign was played on a beautifully warm afternoon on a Greenyards pitch which was a credit to Head Groundsman, Gordon Barkham, and his team. Craig Edwards opened the scoring for Melrose with a penalty at eight minutes and Ross Cook replied with a similar award for Boroughmuir three minutes later. At 28 minutes Melrose were awarded a penalty 10 metres out and a quick tap by Edwards saw him dive over for a try. Three minutes after that Rory Couper received the ball on the left wing and altering his line of attack crossed for a try under the posts, Cook converting to give Boroughmuir the lead. A further three minutes later Edwards chipped the ball through the defence for Jamie Murray to follow through and score a try between the posts, Edwards converting.

Fourteen minutes into the second half Edwards increased the Melrose lead with a penalty, but four minutes later Malcolm Clapperton raced down the stand side to score a try; Cook's conversion reduced the Melrose lead to the single point. The lead returned to the visitors with Cook's second penalty at 67 minutes. Six minutes from the end Edwards restored the Melrose lead with another penalty, but the drama continued and Cook, with three minutes to go kicked the penalty to give the visitors victory.
