Melrose 8 Heriots 34

In front of IRB Representatives monitoring the IRB Experimental Law variations this SHE "Super Cup" match played on a beautiful afternoon for rugby with The Greenyards looking in superb condition. Melrose, because of numerous injuries to senior players, had to "blood" several inexperienced youngsters whilst Heriots, with National Cup duties next week, fielded a much stronger team. Three minutes into the match a Heriots' cross field passing movement, following a lineout on the Melrose 22, saw James Thomson run in for a try behind the posts, converted by Graham Wilson. Three minutes later, courtesy of the posts, Scott Wight put Melrose on the scoresheet with a penalty. At 10 minutes Marc Teague "breenged" down the wing to score a try in the Policeman's Corner. There was no more scoring until 31 minutes when Thomson kicked a penalty, then, three minutes before the interval Mike Goldie took an overlap down the stand side to score a try in the Town Corner, well converted by Thomson. The interval score could have been closer had Melrose not eschewed several kicks at goal.
