Melrose 19 Hawick 13

Once again groundsman Gordon Barkham is to be thanked for working his magic on The Greenyards pitch which had suffered from the ravages of an overnight frost. Hawick had the advantage of the bitterly cold wind at the kick off, but early on it was Melrose who did the pressing. On almost their first visit to the Melrose half Hawick won a penalty which Craig Neish, at 9 minutes, kicked from the touchline. There was plenty of effort from both sides for the rest of the half, but no more scoring.
Half time - Melrose 0 Hawick 3.
Four minutes into the second half John Dalziel finished a move by crashing over to the right of the posts for a try converted by Scott Wight. Four minutes later Melrose had quick hands across the Hawick 22 with Jordan Macey finishing with a fine try in the Church corner, Wight converting from near the touchline. At 69 minutes Wight sold an exquisite dummy, made the break, and dashed up the stand side. The ball ended up in Macey's hands and he scored an excellent try in the opposite corner from his first one. Hawick never gave up and at 76 minutes with his forwards battering away at the Melrose line, replacement scrum half Bruce Campbell nipped in for a try near the Policeman's Corner leaving Neish a difficult , but successful conversion. The final play of the match saw Neish kicking his second penalty to give Hawick a "losing" bonus point.
