Thanks to groundsman, Gordon Barkham, The Greenyards pitch was in great condition, despite the recent rains and snow, for this SHE Premier 1 match. Melrose kicked off with the wind at their backs, but, apart from a missed penalty by Scott Wight at 15 minutes there was nothing to worry the scoreboard until 37 minutes. Interpassing between the Melrose backs and forwards at that stage ended with Bill Wallace crashing over for a try between the posts giving Wight a straightforward conversion. Two minutes later Jordan Murphy flyhacked a loose ball on his own 22 then chased a subsequent kick ahead winning the race for the touchdown in the corner. It was a difficult conversion, but Wight was up to the challenge.

45 seconds into the second half Ayr passed down the far touchline ending with Julian Montoro diving into the Church corner for a try, Boris Fournails kicking a difficult conversion. Four minutes later Melrose put together a fine handling movement down the far touchline with captain Jamie Murray "squelching" over for a try in the Policeman's Corner for a try. At 66 minutes Macey put in a grubber kick on the Melrose 10m line in front of the stand, picked up, ran, passed in to Wight who then passed inwards to replacement hooker, Graham Innes, doing what a good hooker does by backing up centre field, who dived over for the Melrose "bonus point" try between the posts, converted by Wight. Melrose started Barbarian-type rugby at this point, and, at 74 minutes Macey received a pass on his own 10 m line and proceeded to "skin" his opposition on the outside, in front of the stand, to score a lovely try in the Town Corner. At 77 minutes Melrose put in another fine handling movement with replacement threequarter, Barry Watson, crossing in the Policeman's Corner and dotting down for a try between the posts leaving Wight an easy conversion to end the scoring.
