This SHE Premier 1 match was played on a foul afternoon. Melrose had the benefit of the strong wind in the first half, but did not use it to their advantage. At the second time of asking Scott Wight opened the scoring with a penalty at eight minutes. Four minutes later Hawks made their first foray into the Melrose half. Following a kick into the corner Gary Strain was driven over for a try. Wight kicked his second penalty at 19 minutes and, three minutes later, Hawks, through Rory Kerr, scored their second try to recover the lead.

Hawks attempted to make better use of the wind in the second half, but it was 25 minutes into the half before they troubled the scoreboard. A brawl, involving numerous players, saw John Dalziel being held to blame and sent to the "sin bin". With Melrose shorthanded Ian Noble was driven over by a mob of Hawks forwards for his side's third try. With only a few minutes to go Wight kicked his third penalty achieving a "losing" bonus point for the visitors.
