Although most of the first half of this SHE Premier 1 match was played in the Ayr half of the pitch the pressure exerted by Melrose was absorbed by the Ayr defence. The only scores in the half were penalties kicked by Scott Wight (30 mins.) and Kenny Diffenthal (38 mins.)

Nine minutes into the second half David Whiteford made an electrifying break, the ball eventually reaching the right wing where it was received by Graeme Dodds who crashed over for a try, converted by Wight. With ten minutes to go Ayr were camped out on the Melrose line and from a scrummage pick up by Glen Tippet the ball passed to Damien Kelly who barged over for a try. A penalty in front of the posts by Diffenthal in the last couple of minutes saw Ayr sneak a win by a single point; the only consolation for Melrose being a "losing" bonus point.
