SWRU Plate semi-final.

Lismore Ladies 5 Melrose Ladies 29

Borders rugby will be represented at Murrayfield Cup Finals day by the two women’s teams as Melrose Ladies and fellow Borderers Berwick Ladies both overturned Premier opposition and booked their return to contest the SWRU Plate, in a re-match of last years Bowl final.
At times not pretty, but always hard fought, all the Melrose players deserve credit for a fine victory and a step up in performance against a team currently lying fifth in the Premier league, to which Melrose have won promotion for next season.
Outweighed but not outgunned, Melrose’s superior mobility allowed them to contain the early waves of pressure from the bulkier Premier side. Scrapping for every ball the forwards put in a power of work as they settled into the game and were rewarded as two midfield breaks allowed quick transfer to the wing where Kirsty Cook ran well to bag two tries. This was quickly followed by a series of dynamic rucks which created just enough space for Julie Thompson to drive over to make the half time score 17-0.
Lismore responded with a number of sustained drives and were rewarded when they crossed from a quickly taken penalty. Sensing danger, Melrose moved up a gear and kept the home side pinned in their own half for the remainder of the game and sealed the victory with tries from Tania Pender and new signing Mary Lafaiki, who had a storming game on the flank. Kirsty Stewart converted two.
