Melrose Ladies win at Murrayfield
Melrose Ladies 48 Berwick ladies 0
Melrose Ladies continued a successful season by lifting the SWRU Plate at Murrayfield on Saturday. Determined to avoid last years close finish they threw everything at Berwick for the entire 80 minutes and some brilliant spells of rugby handling brought them an eight try victory. Credit must go to Berwick, who, although outplayed, refused to lie down and fought a spirited rearguard action which probably prevented the score from doubling. Melrose pounded the Berwick line right from the kick off and looked to be in for a difficult day as they were held up over the line on numerous occasions in the first quarter before pouncing on a dropped Berwick pass for the try which finally settled the nerves. There were perhaps too many knock-ons but in between Melrose put together several periods of multi phase possession as they ran Berwick ragged to score at regular intervals. Berwick’s only real chance came late on, but even then their trademark “stuff it up the jumper” rumble was stopped and even driven back by a dominant Melrose side. Best try came from young Grace Mclean, when quick hands put her away from her own half and she just burned the Berwick defence on the outside. On a day when everyone earned plus marks it was pocket dynamo Mary Lafaiki who just edged Player of the Match. Scorers were Grace Mclean (2), Gillian Paterson (2), Kirsty Cook, Lorna Doyle, Lynne Clark and Sandi Lyall. Kirsty Stewart converted four.
