It was the first of a Murrayfield cup double for the Melrose club as the Ladies preceded the men with what was a hard fought victory, despite the score line. An eight try haul shared equally between forwards and backs was fair reward for a workmanlike performance. Without ever threatening much in attack the Dundee side fought a spirited rearguard action, never allowing Melrose to relax into the free flowing rugby they are capable of. Dominating possession from the start, Melrose varied their game well, mixing together some good driving and rolling mauls led well by Kayleigh Elliot, Gillian Thomson and Megan McIver in behind some forceful attacks by the backs. Facing such pressure it was almost inevitable that even the best defence would crack and so it was as the brave Dundee defence was forced to concede tries as the game progressed. Half time 24-0.
The second half introduction of Lyndsey Gilchrist(last weeks broken finger well strapped) kick-started the Melrose back line and her direct running sparked off two scintillating attacks, with passing through several pairs of hands for two tries which effectively killed the game. With one eye on the celebrations a catalogue of Melrose errors gave Dundee their first glimpse of the try line and a charged down kick gifted them a try with the last action of the match.
Melrose scorers were Kirsty Cook (2), Luana Henderson, Steff McKenna, Hannah Rorrison, Jenny Ryall, Megan McIver and Nicola Halfpenny who converted two.
